Should You Do a First Look?

Written By: M.Michelle

Wedding days are eventful and filled with loved ones you likely haven't seen in quite some time. Seeing you for the first time in your gowns or tuxedo is an experience you may want them to have in the right moment. Then, there are others, like maybe your partner, wedding party, or immediate family you may want to get a glimpse of you before the ceremony. In these cases, having a first look is ideal.

1. Private Moments: The Couple's First Look

When I first got into wedding cinematography, first looks were mainly reserved for the couple. It's a time for the couple to enjoy each other more intimately, compared to sharing the moment with all their guests. For some, this is ideal if you or your partner are more emotional, and you don't want to lose it in front of everyone. While these make for beautiful moments on camera, I understand that some people are more emotionally reserved.

2. A Father's Embrace: The Bride and Her Father

The next most common first look I have the pleasure of filming is between the bride and her father. Similar to the first look with the groom, it allows the father and daughter to have a moment between them before he walks her down the aisle. It's a time to see his daughter dolled up in a safe space where he can freely share his emotions. It also allows a few moments for words of wisdom before the bride-to-be takes on a new last name. We can also add to this list siblings and sometimes grandparents. As a filmmaker, I never know how a loved one has invested in them and their dream day, but I love capturing the love and their loved one's first glimpse as they embark on a new chapter and journey in life and love.

3. Cheers to Friendship: Bridesmaids' First Look

The first look I'm beginning to get more requests for are with bridesmaids. This may be my favorite because, of all the first looks, this is the one that will remind the bride of how beautiful she looks and the fact that she's ready to take on the day. Bridesmaids are like your personal cheerleaders. Their squeals of excitement, seeing the bride in her gown, the full look with hair and makeup, is enough to get anyone excited about the event ahead.

So, Should You Do a First Look?

Deciding whether or not to have a first look on your wedding day ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and the type of intimate moments you want to create. It's a beautiful way to connect with your loved ones before the ceremony, whether it's with your partner, your parents, siblings, or bridesmaids.

Consider the following when making your decision:

- Emotional Comfort: Are you or your partner emotionally reserved, or do you want to share this special moment with a select few before the big ceremony?

- Family Bonds: Do you have a special bond with your parents, siblings, or grandparents that you want to capture in a private moment?

- Bridesmaids' Support: Would you love the energy and excitement of your bridesmaids as they cheer you on and boost your confidence before you walk down the aisle?

Final Thoughts

In the end, a first look is a beautiful way to add a personal touch to your wedding day and create cherished memories. Whether you choose to share this moment with your partner, family, or bridesmaids, it's a decision that will make your day even more special and memorable. So, should you do a first look? It's entirely up to you and the unique story you want to tell through your wedding film.
